All About Rocker Sole Shoes

Last week, I was invited to attend a medical seminar in New York City about rocker sole shoes hosted by Eneslow, the Foot Comfort Center. The seminar was attended heavily by podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons interested in learning about the therapeutic benefits of rocker sole footwear. I had a chance to discuss the various types of rocker sole shoes on the market and let them "test drive" MBT, RYN and Z-CoiL shoes. The doctors were impressed with the depth of the material covered and had a much better understanding of this exploding category of health and wellness footwear. The seminar was presented by Robert Schwartz, C.Ped, president of Eneslow. I also had the opportunity to do some RYN product training with Eneslow's excellent staff.

As I talked with each podiatrist, I explained the similarities and differences between "unstable" rocker sole shoes (MBT, Skechers) and "stable" rocker sole shoes (RYN, Mephisto Sano, "Finnamic"). After testing each brand, most doctors agreed that the "stable" category of rocker sole shoes were better suited for patients with loose ligaments or unstable feet. They also liked the idea that many shoes in the "stable" category have adequate depth to accept orthotics, if needed.

There are currently over 40 brands of rocker sole shoes on the market. Each brand of rocker shoe functions somewhat differently. Alegria shoes have a forefoot rocker, which helps ease the toe-off phase of the gait cycle. Some shoes have a negative heel rocker, which simulates walking uphill. Finn Comfort "Finnamic" has a gradual, midfoot rocker with fabulous arch support. The most important thing is to try on the shoe that works the best for you.

The following article and video I produced 2 weeks ago has received numerous e-mails and comments from podiatrists, certified pedorthists and consumers around the country. Most people commented that they liked the article, because it clearly explained the footwear category without being an "infomercial" for a particular brand.

PS: I also got to experience a major snow storm in New York. What a mess. It took three days to get out of the city. But I learned valuable survival skills, like how to wash my clothes in a hotel sink!
